Late Spring Update
Our CSA is now full for the season! Thank you to everyone who signed up, we're excited for the season ahead of us!
Are we out of the danger of freezing temps yet?! The last few mornings of April, we had temps near 20˚ and then this past Friday and Saturday mornings we had temps around 28˚, which has slowed our spring planting just a bit. Hopefully we're only looking at a couple more light frosts and we can continue to get our full season crops in the ground. Our greenhous is filling up with eggplant, tomato, and pepper plants happily getting ready for the long season ahead. Most of our cold hearty plants have been transplanted and we're busy getting direct seeded crops in the soil in the few days of sun between our rainy/overcast days. As long as the temps stay warm, this weather will give our crops a great start for the year!
We've got our team assembled for the year. Emily has been with us since mid-March and Corey joined us in April. Our apprentices will be with us through October, so you'll have plenty of time to meet them at market or here on the farm.
Our new flock of laying hens should be ready to pick up soon! We can't wait to have a flock back rotating through our pastures. This year, we are buying a flock of adult laying hens (rather than raising them from chicks, they are more than 5 months old before they start laying eggs) from a hatchery in the Finger Lakes region of NY and plan to sell our flock at the end of the season, to avoid the high cost of feeding throughout the winter when egg production is low.Our new hens have been raised on certified organic grain and will be a single breed flock of brown egg laying hens. We were too late to order heritage breed laying hens from the hatchery this year, but hope to return to a mixed flock of brown, blue, and white egg layers for the 2013 season.
Farmers markets are back in full swing! We'll be back in June, but in the meantime, be sure to stop by and support your local farmers!
See you all soon!
